We are looking for two people join our Team providing support to our elected councillors and the communities they serve. You’ll need to be flexible and hardworking, and must above all have a keen interest in how councilors ‘champion’ and seek to solve local issues and represent and work for their residents.
The job involves providing high quality non-political support for councillors; being a ‘first point of contact’ for these councillors; overseeing the smooth operation of the Councillor Casework IT System; dealing with callers and email messages sensitively and effectively; play a role in delivering a councillor training and development programme; and general problem-solving to help councillors best serve their residents.
In order to do this effectively you will have to manage a wide range of tasks; develop a good understanding of the Council; build excellent working relationships with the key ‘go to’ officers; maintain an ongoing dialogue with councillors so as to best understand their individual and collective support needs; seek to resolve issues in a business-like and professional manner, ensuring the both Councillors and enquirers are kept fully briefed; and maintain a confidential, professional and sensitive approach at all times.
You must be educated to at least A-level, self-assured, able to speak and write clearly and concisely in faultless ‘plain English’, and have good IT skills, political awareness, an eye for detail and lots of enthusiasm. You’ll also need to show compassion and enthusiasm, to communicate messages clearly and effectively and to work well as part of our wider Team.
This is a great opportunity to work with senior officers and elected councillors at the heart of a busy London local authority and, whilst challenging at times, will provide a varied and solid grounding for a career at the Royal Borough or elsewhere in the wider public sector.
Candidates will be expected to express clearly in their application form (in no more than 500 words) why they are interested in this opportunity; to have researched and understand the role of local councillors and the support they might need to serve their constituents. At interview stage we will assess your knowledge and interest in the Royal Borough and the role of councillors, probably by way of a short presentation and/or a written test; and look especially for candidates who are keen, informed, can ‘think on their feet’ and are well-presented.
Your experience is important but so too is your outlook and attitude and we welcome applications from people from a wide range of backgrounds.
The job is based at Kensington Town Hall where we work in bright open-plan offices with excellent facilities. Flexible working is encouraged.
For an informal chat about the role, please contact Robert Sheppard, Head of Governance, on 020 7361 2947.
